As we age, it is common for men and women to experience darkened or discolored patches of skin. These pigmentation-based conditions can arise as a result of sun damage, aging, scarring or hyperpigmentation, and they can be frustrating to treat on your own. For our patients seeking to even skin tone and combat pigmentation, we are proud to offer a variety of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) treatments which offer a modern solution for uneven tone and dark spots.
How IPL Treatments Work to Reduce Unwanted Pigmentation
IPL™ utilizes high energy light pulses to penetrate upper levels of skin and stimulate collagen production in lower levels of skin. Reaching these lower levels of skin is key, since darker spots or brown spots result from your skin’s natural production of brown pigment, or melanin, in these lower levels of skin. IPL™ not only stimulates collagen production to improve texture of skin, but it also breaks down melanin into small particles that can then rise to the surface to flake away or be removed naturally by the body’s lymphatic system.
What to Expect During IPL™ Treatments
IPL™ therapy takes place in the comfort and privacy of our office and offers results with minimal, customizable downtime. This treatment utilizes multiple wavelengths of light, a prime difference from some laser treatments which use only one concentrated wavelength. This means you can expect some minor redness rather than experiencing the longer downtime of more intensive laser skin resurfacing treatments.
During treatment, your aesthetician will first clean the treatment area and apply a cooling gel to the skin. They will then gently press the treatment handpiece to the skin, and you will feel mild zaps as the light energy begins to penetrate lower levels of the skin. Patient discomfort is minimal compared to other treatments, and some experience a stinging sensation similar to that of a snapped rubber band. Treatments can take between thirty to ninety minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Types of IPL™ Treatments
Harmony Healing offers multiple forms of IPL™ Therapy and can tailor treatment to individual client needs and goals.
IPL™ Skin Resurfacing
IPL™ therapy can be used to treat a wide range of skin imperfections, including sun damage, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, wrinkles, freckles, age spots, broken blood vessels and rosacea. It is used on the hands, neck, chest and other areas of the body.
IPL™ Photofacial Treatments
IPL™ photofacial treatments are used to help target areas of the face that make you look older than you feel and can address a wide variety of skin issues. This easy treatment can combat several signs of aging, including hyperpigmentation and brown spots, as it works to rebuild firmness and minimize the appearance of sun damage. This treatment, as the name suggests, is focused on targeting problem areas on the face.
Photorejuvenation is a one-stop shop for younger, brighter skin. Through high-intensity pulses of broadband light, your aesthetician will work to target deeper layers of damage, destroying discoloration and pigmentation at its source, while leaving surrounding skin unharmed. Since photorejuvenation stimulates new cell growth below the skin’s surface, it can also address textured acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and large pores. These treatments use a range of wavelengths that make it ideal for treating large areas on the face, chest, arms or back that are affected by skin discoloration issues.
BroadBand Light (BBL™)
BBL™ uses intensely focused light energy to destroy pigment in cells in an effort to fade discolorations and stimulate collagen growth for a smoother skin appearance. BBL™ encourages the skin to repair itself for a more even tone and balanced complexion. In addition to targeting unwanted pigmentation, BBL™ can also eliminate broken capillaries, diffuse redness and even fade birthmarks. It is an extremely advanced form of intense pulsed light therapy that pushes pigmented, damaged layers of skin to the surface where they can peel or flake away, leaving an even skin tone.
Harmony Healing is proud to offer multiple IPL™ treatment options that can be individualized based on client needs and goals. For men and women seeking to combat issues of pigmentation or dark spots, IPL™ therapy provides a quick and effective treatment with little to no downtime and minimal discomfort.
What to Expect After IPL™ Treatment
After IPL™, you may experience mild discomfort or a tightness to the skin, and your aesthetician will apply a moisturizer to increase comfort and may recommend using a cooling pack, as well. With IPL™ therapy for pigmentation treatment and scarring, it may take up to a week for damaged cells to rise to the surface and flake away. It is also normal for targeted dark spots to become more noticeable during the healing process; however, once the cells begin to flake away, patients will begin to see clearer, more even skin underneath. Most patients can expect to see results within a few weeks of their first treatment, and for optimal results, a series of treatments over three to five months is recommended. The number of treatments needed will depend on your unique goals and the degree of pigmentation being treated.
IPL™ treatments are an investment in yourself and your self-confidence, and it is important to be able to communicate with and trust your care provider. At Harmony Healing, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, individualized and compassionate care to all of our patients. We will work with you to attain personal goals for overall health while helping you look and feel your best.
