Thread Facelifts: a Non-Surgical Solution
Our bodies naturally produce proteins to help us look and feel our best, but as we age, that natural production begins to slow. This can lead to a gradual loosening of skin, fine lines and wrinkles and cause other changes that can detract from our self-confidence or make us look older than we feel. For individuals hoping to combat these changes with minimal downtime, PDO Threads, also known as thread facelifts, can provide a subtle but significant lift that improves the overall texture and elasticity of skin.
What are Thread Facelifts?
Thread facelifts are a minimally invasive and nonsurgical solution to improve the appearance of loose or sagging skin. Thanks to PDO sutures, it is possible to achieve lifted and tightened skin without the need for serious surgery. Traditional facelifts call for longer recovery time and sometimes have higher risk, while thread facelifts achieve dramatic results and allow patients to return to their normal routines quickly.
PDO sutures also stimulate natural collagen and elastin production which plump the skin from below its surface and provide skin with the ability to “snap back” when wrinkled or pulled. Collagen and elastin production naturally begin to decline around our 30s and that decline continues with age. By our 70s, production is typically 80 percent less than it was in our 20s. This decline in collagen and elastin can lead to increased wrinkles, loosened skin and other concerns. Thread facelifts can treat many of those concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
How Do PDO Threads Work?
PDO threads are small, dissolvable sutures made of polydioxanone. This absorbable polymer is flexible and durable, and when inserted into the skin, it can help smooth the skin’s texture and provide lift and volume. PDO Threads come in a variety of textures, allowing treatment to be individualized to best meet unique needs and goals. The textures include mono, cog and screw threads.
Mono threads are singular, smooth sutures that are anchored to the face. They provide a small lift to the skin and are best for individuals seeking skin tightening and rejuvenation.
Cog threads are sutures with a barbed texture and they provide better lift than mono threads. In addition to lift, cog threads increase collagen production. They are best for individuals seeking lift and improved volume.
Screw threads are one to two entwined threads that provide volume to the treated area in addition to lift.
What to Expect During Treatment
Prior to your thread facelift, you will receive a one-on-one consultation to determine your needs and goals and to discuss the best types of threads to meet your goals. On the day of treatment, your skin will be marked to show the areas where threads will be inserted as well as the direction of the threads. Your provider will thoroughly numb the area.
Threads are inserted through the use of a long cannula—a thin tube that can be inserted through the tissue beneath the skin. Once the cannula reaches its set location, the thread is released, and the cannula is removed from the skin. This process is repeated until the desired lift and tightening is achieved. The number of threads can vary between one and 15 depending on the treatment area.
After thread insertion, the treatment area will be massaged to smooth tissue and to make sure there is no dimpling at the treatment area. Because thread facelifts are minimally invasive, it is also possible to combine this treatment with laser treatments, peels or fillers, depending on your goals. These additional treatments can help to enhance overall results.
What to Expect After Treatment
As a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment, thread facelifts also involve minimal recovery time. There is little-to-no downtime and most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within one week. Following treatment, results can be seen almost immediately and will continue to improve over the course of several weeks. While thread facelifts are a temporary treatment, results do last for 12-18 months as they work to reposition facial and neck issues in order to achieve a more youthful, lifted appearance.
