If too much time in the sun, normal aging, or acne has left you with skin damage, laser skin resurfacing can help correct blotches, scars, wrinkles, and lines to help you have younger, firmer and healthier skin. Laser skin resurfacing removes each layer of your skin with precision. New skin cells form and new collagen fibers are stimulated to grow during the healing process, giving you a tighter, smoother skin surface.
Laser resurfacing is an outpatient procedure. Ten days before the procedure, you will stop taking all vitamins, certain medications, and supplements that can affect clotting. If you smoke, you will also need to stop for two weeks so that your skin healing is not prolonged.
You may have local anesthetic injections, or a topical numbing cream applied to certain areas of the face to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Treatments take about 30-45 minutes. You will experience some swelling, which is normal. Once the treatment is over, you will feel like you have a mild sunburn. Your skin will become dry and peel 5 to 7 days after the procedure. Your skin may be lighter after the treatment, and it will be very important that you wear broad-spectrum sunscreen while your skin is healing. Better yet, avoid the sun while you are healing. Normal healing takes between 10 days to 3 weeks.
Some patients see new, rejuvenated skin immediately. Your skin will continue to improve for up to a year. The results will last for many years, but the normal aging process will mean that normal lines and wrinkles will reappear. You can repeat this procedure as needed.
