Kybella: Banish your double chin without surgery
Have you ever been looking down at your phone only to be unpleasantly surprised by the selfie camera? Your submental fullness, or double chin, is often the first thing you see. Even the most confident among us shut that down image down as soon as possible.
Submental fullness is a pocket of excess fat beneath the chin caused by weight gain or heredity. It can be stubborn to improve even with weight loss. Facial exercises that claim to target and reduce a double chin are also ineffective.
One treatment that does target submental fullness in women and men is KYBELLA®. KYBELLA® uses a natural acid injected directly into the fat below the chin. This acid works naturally in the body to destroy fat cells and reduce the appearance of a double chin.
How does KYBELLA® work?
KYBELLA® uses synthetic deoxycholic acid to break down and absorb fat cells and tissue. Deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body. When we inject this acid into the fatty area under the chin, fat cells are destroyed and removed by the body.
What should I expect during KYBELLA® treatment?
When you arrive for your appointment, we will first mark injection sites on the treatment area. If you are concerned about discomfort, we can use a topical anesthetic or numbing injection. Then we inject small amounts of the fat-dissolving formula into the treatment area, directly into the fatty tissue.
The KYBELLA® injection process typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The number of injections needed depends on your current fullness and your goals.
The procedure removes and breaks down fatty tissue naturally over the next few weeks.
KYBELLA® is FDA approved for improving the appearance of submental fullness.
Is KYBELLA® treatment painful?
Topical numbing agents or anesthetic injections can improve comfort. Before and following treatment, patients can use ice or cold packs to ease discomfort and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen are also an option following KYBELLA®.
What is the recovery time after KYBELLA®?
Recovery time will vary depending on your customized treatment. Swelling, bruising and numbness are common in the days and weeks following the procedure.
If you experience facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or injection site problems such as bruising or open sores, contact us immediately.
How many KYBELLA® treatments will I need for the best results?
The number of KYBELLA® treatments needed will depend on your current profile and your goals. Patients must wait at least a month between KYBELLA® treatments. Patients should not receive more than six treatments.
Will my neck and chin skin sag after KYBELLA® removes the fat?
In most cases, a patient's skin quickly adjusts to the shrinking fat deposit, and there is little to no sagging.
During your consultation, we will assess your skin type and goals and discuss whether sagging may occur.
How long will results last?
Fat cells destroyed by KYBELLA® can no longer store fat and are swept away and absorbed by the body. With the fat cells gone, most people do not need further treatment after they achieve their goals.
Who is not an appropriate candidate for KYBELLA®?
Before receiving KYBELLA®, we will discuss your medical history and possible risk factors such as prescription medications. We do not recommend KYBELLA® for people who have had injuries to the chin and neck, have medical conditions that affect the jaw or throat, or bleeding disorders. There is also a waiting period after other treatments including Botox, radiofrequency, laser procedures, chemical peels, or dermal fillers.
Women who are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or who plan to breastfeed should not use KYBELLA®.
If you are tired of dodging photos and hiding your double chin, it is time to get confident!
