At Harmony Healing, we are huge fans of harnessing the power of light to eliminate damaged skin cells and stimulate the production of new, healthier cells that lead to younger-looking skin. Whether you are here for an IPL™ photofacial, BroadBand Light (BBL™) session or photorejuvenation treatment, aftercare plays an important role in your experience. Here, we will share several tips for a healthy, speedy recovery from any type of IPL treatment.
What to Expect After IPL Treatments
Treatments that use IPL technology cause changes in the deeper layers of skin to stimulate new collagen growth and create smoother skin above. It works to reduce hyperpigmentation by targeting darker skin cells and breaking down melanin, which causes dark spots. These tiny particles of pigment will either flake away over the following week or are swept away naturally by the lymphatic system. You may also experience some mild swelling, but most patients are able to return to work or resume their normal activities right away. It is completely normal to experience these types of side effects after IPL treatments, and our aftercare tips will help keep any uncomfortable elements of recovery to a minimum.
IPL Aftercare Immediately Following Your Treatment
The first step in your IPL aftercare regimen is icing your treated area immediately for approximately 30 minutes. After the first half hour, you need to apply an ice pack to the area for 10 to 15 minutes every hour for the first three hours. You should also sleep with an extra pillow under your head during the night of your treatment to help prevent swelling. Staying well-hydrated will support keeping any swelling to a minimum.
Washing your face the evening of your treatment is recommended as long as a gentle cleanser is used along with warm water. You can do this gently twice a day, ensuring to pat your skin dry afterward with a clean towel. Your skin will likely feel and look as though it has experienced a mild sunburn which can last anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days after treatment. It is important to wait for this redness to subside before applying makeup.
When it comes to IPL aftercare, the most important things to avoid are:
- Exfoliating too soon which can inflame the skin and prolong the healing process
- Scratching or picking the darkened areas that are beginning to flake which can cause scarring
- Taking hot showers or baths which can cause inflammation and swelling
- Sun exposure which will be particularly harmful to sensitive skin.
To enhance your recovery process, keep your skin thoroughly moisturized. Use soothing ingredients and avoid products that contain harsh chemicals. You should also get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous exercise for the first two days after treatment.
IPL Treatments Offered at Harmony Healing
Light therapy is an excellent way to resurface the skin without the need for chemicals or significant downtime. We are proud to offer the following types of light therapy for the benefit of our patients:
BroadBand Light (BBL™)
BBL™ uses focused laser pulses to destroy pigment in cells and stimulate collagen growth for a more plump, youthful firmness that decreases the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. By stimulating new cell growth processes under the skin, BBL™ encourages the skin to repair itself for a more even tone and balanced complexion. These treatments can be used anywhere on the body and are highly customizable to suit varying requirements for downtime.
Forever Young™ is an innovative technology that uniquely delivers light therapy targeting the signs of aging and sun damage and effectively provides a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. It removes age spots, freckles, redness, small vessels and more. All areas of the body can be treated for skin that will look clearer and smoother with reduced vascularity and redness.
An IPL™ photofacial is an extremely useful treatment that can be used to address a wide variety of issues. Discoloration, uneven skin texture and fine lines can be dramatically improved by this full-face treatment. Additionally, photofacials can help tighten skin and improve facial contouring. In addition to treating the face, photofacials can improve damaged skin and acne scars occurring on the neck, chest, arms or back. For patients looking for skin resurfacing treatments that are effective, yet require extremely minimal downtime, an IPL™ photofacial is a great choice.
