Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Therapy
When you look in the mirror, are you bothered by wrinkles, age spots, uneven skin tone, broken capillaries or large, visible pores?
If you answered yes, then it’s time to do an about face!
These common issues for women and men typically occur due to aging, sun exposure or hormonal fluctuations. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Therapy is a simple skin resurfacing treatment that improves these issues and leaves you with a brighter more youthful appearance.
Issues improved with IPL therapy
IPL therapy is a popular choice for treating the face, chest, hands, neck or anywhere you would like to see improved, younger-looking skin.
IPL therapy is an excellent treatment option for:
- Brown or age spots (hyperpigmentation)
- Sun damage
- Excessive flushing
- Large, visible pores
- Stretch marks
- Uneven texture
- Fine lines and wrinkles
Most commonly treated areas include the face, neck and chest. However, treatments may also include hands, arms, legs and even the back.
What are the benefits of IPL therapy?
IPL rejuvenation is a quick, in-office procedure with no downtime and little recovery, depending on the individual treatment. IPL offers an effective, long-lasting solution that is customized to your needs providing a more versatile treatment than other options.
How does IPL therapy work?
IPL therapy uses intense light from a range of wavelengths to target and destroy skin imperfections. Your skin tissues absorb the light energy, which stimulates the production of new collagen. The new collagen growth plumps skin from the inside out, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles or shallow scarring, while also reducing redness, discoloration and spots. The body naturally removes damaged tissue targeted by IPL.
IPL therapy can be customized with a specific wavelength range depending on your goals to optimize results as quickly and thoroughly as is possible.
What should I expect during my IPL therapy?
At your IPL therapy appointment, you first will be fitted with protective eyewear. Your provider will apply a gel to the treatment area to keep the skin cooler. You may also be given pain medication before or after the procedure. After you are comfortable, the IPL device is gently pressed to the skin at customized settings to treat your specific issues.
The entire procedure typically takes about half an hour, although the time will vary depending on the issues being treated, the part of the body being treated and the size of the treatment area. Some patients report mild stinging or burning during the procedure.
After IPL therapy, treated areas may feel warm and prickly, as though they have a sunburn, for up to 48 hours. We recommend protecting the treated area from sun exposure for two to five days. We will develop a plan for your recovery and aftercare during your consultation.
When will I see results?
You will notice a difference after one treatment; however, some patients complete up to six treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart. There is no downtime between sessions, and you can resume regular activities right away.
While the treatments are quick, the overall process takes time. In the first week or two after a treatment, blemishes or spots may darken before fading.
How long will my results last?
Depending on what conditions you're treating and your desired results, you will likely need to schedule multiple IPL treatments.
Who is a good candidate for IPL?
While IPL is a very versatile and effective procedure, it may not be the best fit for every person and condition. For instance, IPL is somewhat less effective on very dark or tan skin. During your consultation, we'll discuss if IPL therapy is the right path for you to reach your goals.
If you have questions about how IPL can help you get younger-looking skin, we invite you to schedule a consultation and see some of our before and after photos. We'll work with you to create a customized treatment plan that will help you reach the healthy, youthful glow you desire!
