How to Heal Acne Scars

At Harmony Healing, we routinely see patients who are interested in learning how to heal acne scars. As providers of holistic and passionate care, we take acne scar treatment seriously because we know how debilitating acne scars can be to a person’s quality of life. Rather than simply recommending an expensive treatment or trying to sell a particular product to our patients, we dive deep into discovering the root cause of acne scars, remedying it and working hard to promote beautiful new skin growth.

Types of Acne Scars and How to Heal Them

No two acne scars are the same. Because of this, treatments or products that offer a one-size-fits-all approach to healing acne scars will likely deliver lackluster results. At Harmony Healing, we develop personalized acne scar treatment plans based on your unique skin type and type of acne scarring. The most common types of acne scars we treat include:

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (Dark Spots): Discoloration or darkened skin tone that appears after acne heals. These dark patches can remain behind after acne has healed.
  • Keloids: Smooth, hard growths formed by excess scar tissue.
  • Icepick Scars: Small, sharp indentations that are wider at the skin’s surface and become narrower as they reach the skin. These scars are common on the face, forehead and upper cheek.
  • Rolling Scars: Sloping scars that give skin an uneven, wavy appearance. These scars are common on thicker skin such as the lower cheek and jaw.
  • Boxcar Scars: Indents on the skin that are a few millimeters wide with sharp edges that penetrate the skin.

Our Approach to Healing Acne Scars

After an initial examination of your skin where we will work to determine what may have caused your acne and make sure you are not developing new breakouts, we will recommend a series of in-office treatments to heal your acne scars. Depending on your skin type and severity of your acne scars, we may suggest a combination of any of the following treatments:

ProFractional™ Laser Treatments for Acne Scars

ProFractional™ laser treatments are a top choice among women and men seeking smoother, more youthful-looking skin. These treatments are perfect for addressing skin texture issues such as pitted acne scars because they tighten and refresh the skin. The ProFractional™ laser works by permanently remodeling the skin’s foundational structure, meaning results are impressive and long-lasting. Unlike full-field resurfacing, which removes the entire surface area of a treatment site, ProFractional™ treatments ablate narrow-diameter channels into the skin, affecting only a fraction of the total treatment area. This allows for the treatment to be laser-focused on your scars while leaving surrounding healthy tissues untouched.

Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL) Treatments for Acne Scars

IPL treatments are well-suited for fading hyperpigmentation left behind by acne. We offer multiple forms of IPL therapy including BroadBand Light™ (BBL™), an advanced form of IPL that utilizes high-energy light pulses to penetrate upper levels of skin and stimulate collagen production in lower levels of skin. In addition to improving skin’s texture by stimulating collagen growth, BBL™ breaks down melanin into small particles that can then rise to the surface to flake away or be removed naturally by the body’s lymphatic system.

Microneedling Treatments for Acne Scars

Microneedling treatments are an excellent adjunct to ProFractional™ laser treatments or photorejuvenation treatments for healing acne scars. This treatment helps generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, more toned skin. The microneedling handpiece uses ultrafine needles that move up and down at a rate of 8,000 times per minute to create micro-perforations in the skin. In most cases, we recommend adding your body’s own Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to your treatment to activate your skin’s multipotent skin cells to create new tissue. PRP therapy combined with microneedling improves acne scars, large pores and fine lines.

Subcision for Acne Scars

Acne scar subcision is a simple and safe procedure to heal depressed acne scars. This treatment works by using a tri-beveled hypodermic needle to break fibrotic strands which tether the scar to deeper layers of skin. This lifts the depression in the skin and is particularly useful for rolling scars. The area where this procedure is focused will be numbed for your comfort.

Ways to Heal Acne Scars at Home

Proper skin care maintenance is essential to prolonging the results of any treatments for acne scar reversal you receive in our office. We will review your skincare and makeup routine and make expert recommendations on products to avoid and incorporate into your routine to keep your skin healthy. We typically recommend a PCA SKIN® daily care regimen to our acne scar patients which is a professional-grade line available exclusively through licensed skin care professionals. We also suggest that our acne scar patients switch to Oxygenetix 24-hour makeup which is an oxygen-enriched, protective makeup line that is proven to minimize scarring, discomfort and downtime following skin resurfacing procedures.
